Save Money on Electricity
The best ways to save electricity are to look at the items which use most and
see where you can save. Once you have these items done it is time to move onto
smaller items.
Air Conditioning
In homes that use air conditioning, it is typically the most energy intensive
item. If at all possible try not to use it! Ceiling fans will use a lot less
electricity! But if that is not possible then only use air conditioning in the
rooms that you actually use – if you don’t use the spare bedroom or dining room
the don’t cool them.
Heating (if you have electric heat)
Once again only heat the rooms that you are using! Another good tip here is to
turn the heat down, even one degree will make a huge difference to your bills
and you will hardly feel it.
Electric Water Heater
How hot do you really need your water? And how often do you need hot water?
Using a timer and lowering the thermostat can save a lot.
Electric Clothes Dryer
Don’t use it! Use a clothes line or a clothes drying rack instead. If you really
need to use your dryer to make sure that your clothes are soft and need little
ironing then they can always be given a quick five minute dry when the line or
rack has done most of the work.
Lighting (if you're not already using fluorescents)
Use energy saving compact fluorescent bulbs in every light socket. Australia is
making this compulsory this is such a big deal!
Refrigerator (if it was made before 2001)
If you have a pre 2001 refrigerator – get a new one! Refrigerators are becoming
more energy efficient all the time, so consider this when buying a new one.
I hope that tips are useful to get you started.
